One Goal & Two Methods | Reflex Training Legs - EWO Martial Arts

Wing Chun/Ezcrima article ‘One goal and two ways to achieve that goal…’ and WingTczun photo series ‘Feeling training for the legs’ from the Dutch martial arts magazine Budo Sports of June/July 2003, 24 years ago.

One Goal

Realistic and most efficient self-defense is the goal of EWO Ezcrima WingTczun Org. With Wing Chun and Ezcrima, that goal can be achieved in two different ways. Wing Chun begins unarmed and ends armed (double-bladed swords), in contrast to Ezcrima, which begins armed and ends unarmed (cadena de mano).

To be able to do the right thing in a dangerous situation, the spectrum of self-defense must be complete! This entails defending against one or more attackers and against attackers armed with striking or stabbing weapons. For this, it is important to have a good plan. The theory of a martial art comes before practice. If it is not known what and how to train, the right path can never be followed and the goal will never be reached. Strategy and tactics, various principles, concepts, and mottos are of essential importance in both Wing Chun and Ezcrima.

Two Ways To Achieve That Goal

In Wing Chun, for example, the theory of centerlines combined with the first fighting principle (If the path is clear, strike forward.) is among the more important aspects. This does not refer to the vertical centerline on which most vital points lie, and there are certainly more centerlines than a single central line! Naturally, ‘Chi-Sao’ (sticky arms/hands), and later ‘Chi-Gerk’ (sticky legs), are also important Wing Chun components to improve physical awareness and to become very flexible at the same time.

One Goal & Two-Methods - article

In Ezcrima, basic concepts such as ‘Balance’, ‘Power + Speed’, ‘Timing + Motion’, etc., take first place. Only after that do concepts such as ‘Figure 8’, ‘Dos Manos’, ‘Espada y Daga’, etc., become interesting. For example, if the balance is very good, a strike or a punch will also be much better. If the striking and/or punching power is greater, a fight can be ended more quickly, which is not a bad thing for one’s own safety. After all, the longer a fight lasts, the greater the chance of getting hit (more often)!

Comparable Ideas

Both martial arts have comparable ideas, even though it may seem different at first. What is absolutely identical is the strategy. Here, an attack by an opponent is answered with a counter-attack, and that is the defense (attack is the best defense). It is, after all, much better and safer to stop an attack right at the beginning than to wait too long, which makes the situation more dangerous. This requires, among other things, superior footwork that enables flexible mobility, which is particularly important against multiple attackers and certainly also in a fight with weapons.

The organization EWO Ezcrima WingTczun Org. was founded by Edgar Zimmermann in August 2000. EWO Ezcrima WingTczun Org, WingTczun, Ezcrima, and the logo are protected and registered trademarks, in order to better distinguish itself from other martial arts and organizations…
